Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday (May 22, 2025) described the suspension of government advertisements to local newspapers in the Union Territory as “an assault on the freedom of the press”.
“The suspension of government advertisements is not just a financial blow; it’s an assault on the freedom of the press. The move has placed the region’s already fragile media landscape in jeopardy,” Ms. Mufti said in a statement.
She alleged that the move had forced several publications to downsize staff and reduce their frequency of publication. “Journalists, editors, printers, and support staff are being pushed into financial distress. This cannot be allowed to continue,” she said.
Calling for government intervention, the PDP chief appealed to former Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah to take note of the issue. “I appeal to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take cognisance of this crisis and ensure that advertisements are restored to all empanelled newspapers without discrimination,” Ms. Mufti said.
She also alleged that advertisements were being selectively distributed, with over two dozen newspapers reportedly denied support. “Over two dozen newspapers have been denied advertisements, often without any clear justification. This policy has bred fear and self-censorship,” she added.
