Srinagar: Hurriyat Vice Chancellor Syed Ali Shah Geelani He died late on Wednesday at his residence in the Hyderpora area of Srinagar, leaving behind a divided legacy of separatism that he had nurtured as a pro-Pakistan voice in Jammu and Kashmir for decades. He was 92 years old and had been unwell for months.
An ANI report quoted IGP (Kashmir range) Vijay Kumar as saying that internet services were suspended in the Valley as part of a series of precautionary restrictions.
Referring to Geelani as a “Kashmiri freedom fighter”, Pakistan PM Imran Khan declared, “The flag of Pakistan will remain at half-mast and we will observe a day of official mourning.”
Family sources said that his body would be taken to his native village in Sopore for the last rites.
