Polyuria is a medical condition used to define excessive urination, which is another typical sign of diabetes. Uncontrolled or high blood sugar levels force the kidneys to work harder to remove unused glucose and toxins from the bloodstream. After the kidneys filter out the excess glucose, it is passed out through urine. Most people produce about 1-2 liters of urine per day, but in case of polyuria, this increases to more than 3 liters of urine a day. Other conditions that lead to polyuria are pregnancy, kidney disease, high calcium levels, and diuretic medications.
