The North Group match of the T20 Blast 2022 between Nottinghamshire and Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston on Sunday, 5 June witnessed the incident when two batsmen retired. In a rain-interrupted eight-over game, Bears captain Carlos Brathwaite and opposition batsman Samit Patel used tactics during the final overs of their team’s innings.
After batting first, Chris Benjamin’s quick 36 off 17 balls, studded with four fours and two sixes, put the Bears on the board to put up a decent total of 98/5. Brathwaite came to bat in the fifth over and hit two fours and a six in his 11-ball 17.
However, at the end of the sixth over, he decided to retire with his team’s score at 80/4. Sam Hahn converted him in the middle but could not find a ball to face as Alex Davies finished the innings on 14 runs in four balls with the help of a four and a six.

Humming in Birmingham
Nottinghamshire did not have a good start as Joe Clarke dismissed fast bowler Olly Stone early. However, a 55-run stand between Alex Hales and Ben Duckett brought him back into the match. Patel came to bat in the last over of the match and his team needed 15 runs to win.
But after scoring only two runs off so many balls, he retired. Tom Moores hit Craig Miles for a six, but could not take his team home. The Bears won the match by one run and moved up to the second place on the points table in the North Group.

Meanwhile, this is not the first instance when a batsman has retired during the game. Back in April, Ravi Ashwin also retired while playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match. After this Riyan Parag came to bat.
