T20 World Cup 2022 Group 2 Points Table: Team India’s road to semi-finals difficult, match vs Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are now ‘must-win’

Rohit Sharma’s Team India lost by five wickets at the hands of Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in a T20 World Cup 2022 Group 2 match in Perth on Sunday (October 30). Sunday’s win means South Africa have jumped to the top spot in Group 2 with five points ahead of India. Only the top two teams from the group will qualify for the semi-finals.

India, despite the defeat, are second on four points with Bangladesh, who are third after a thrilling win over Zimbabwe earlier on Sunday. A net run rate of +0.844 gives India the edge between those two sides, but Wednesday’s India vs Bangladesh match looks even more important now.

Zimbabwe’s resounding win over Pakistan had given them a chance, but their dramatic defeat to Bangladesh means they will have to do something remarkable to make it to the top two from here. South Africa’s net RR of +2.772 in their 104-run crushing win over Bangladesh means they are now the clear favorites to qualify for the group.

Can Pakistan still make it?

Two defeats, both against India and Zimbabwe coming off the last ball of the matches, give Pakistan something special to make for a place in the semi-finals. And India’s loss against South Africa has dealt another blow to their hopes – a result that complicates the qualification permutations for Babar Azam’s side.

If Pakistan beats South Africa on November 3 and Bangladesh on November 6, they will have six points. But it is completely out of Pakistan’s hands and it looks unlikely that six points will be enough, though not mathematically impossible.

Sunday’s win for South Africa means that even if Pakistan beat the Proteas in their next match, it won’t be enough to see them leapfrog in Temba Bavuma’s side. Net run rate may still be a factor, so a big margin of victory in at least one of the remaining games won’t hurt.

India can no longer afford to lose in either of their last two matches against Bangladesh (November 2) and Zimbabwe (November 6).

India vs Bangladesh – 2 November

It is this consistency that can turn Group 2 on its head. A win for Bangladesh would be an open blow to the group, leaving them two points away from India with only one game to play and potentially paving the way for India’s semifinal snatch in the final round of matches. If India wins, they will have more than a foot to go in the semi-finals Zimbabwe awaits them in Sunday’s fifth and final group game.

Pakistan vs South Africa – 3 November

Based on the results of the matches before them, Pakistan’s meeting with South Africa in Sydney could turn out to be huge for both sides. It is a huge clash between two of the better teams in the world, even if there is a stake at stake in terms of qualification.
