Xi used the rare visit to applaud China’s rule over the city and insisted it was flourishing after a year of political crackdown that quelled discontent.
“To know whether Hong Kong is doing better or worse, the people of Hong Kong will only have to look at that pain,” Premier Su Tseng-chang told reporters in Taipei.
“It’s only been 25 years, and in the past, there was no change to the promised 50 years,” he said, citing Beijing’s promise that Hong Kong could maintain major independence until 2047.

Chinese Communist Party Taiwan has never been ruled, but considers the island part of its territory and has vowed to one day seize it forcefully if needed.
It has offered Taiwan a one-country, two-systems governance model similar to Hong Kong that will reportedly allow it to have some independence and autonomy.
The proposal has been widely rejected across Taiwan’s political spectrum, and Beijing’s suppression of Hong Kong’s independence has reinforced that sentiment.
Su said that Taiwan must stand firm on its sovereignty, independence and democracy.
“China’s so-called One Country, Two system just hasn’t stood up to the test,” he said.
