Kabul: The Taliban chief on Wednesday called for international aid after the worst earthquake in decades in eastern Afghanistan killed at least 1,000 people, warning that the death toll was likely to rise.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck rural, mountainous areas of Paktika and Khost provinces near the Pakistani border on Tuesday night, leaving people sleeping indoors.
