On 6 August, the state imposed a weekend ban on places of worship.
Chennai:
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin today allowed all places of worship to open on all days of the week. He also announced that play schools, kindergarten schools and anganwadis in the state would be allowed to open from November 1.
On 6 August, the state imposed a weekend ban on places of worship. Stalin’s announcement comes a week after the BJP-led opposition held statewide protests against the weekend ban. BJP state chief K Annamalai had termed the restrictions as a sign of the ruling party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), imposing their “atheistic ideology”.
The government, after discussions with public health experts yesterday, decided to relax the COVID-19 restrictions in the state.
Tamil Nadu reported 1,259 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. According to the state health bulletin, the total active cases in the last 24 hours are 15,650 and 1,453 have been cured.
Along with places of worship and schools, the Tamil Nadu government also eased restrictions on shops and commercial establishments, allowing them to remain open till 11 pm. This decision has been taken to avoid overcrowding during the festive season.
The public will be allowed to visit the beaches on Sundays.
From November 1, 100 people have been allowed to attend the wedding ceremony.
Stalin said restrictions on political, social, cultural and festivals would continue to contain the spread of COVID-19. He also urged people to take precautions and get themselves vaccinated.
