Tamil Nadu couple to host wedding reception in Metaverse

Dinesh SP and Janaganandini will choose a digital avatar for their Metaverse reception.

A Tamil Nadu couple is all set to host their wedding reception in the metaverse. Dinesh SP and Janaganandini Ramaswamy will marry in Tamil Nadu’s Shivalingapuram village on the first Sunday of February – but their reception will be conducted digitally. After the wedding ceremony, the couple will switch on their laptops to enter the virtual venue for their Hogwarts-themed reception, which will be attended by friends and family members from around the world, reports times of India,

Dinesh, Project Associate, IIT Madras told TOI, “I came up with the idea of Metaverse Wedding Reception and my fiancé also liked the idea.” “I have been into crypto and blockchain technology, and have been mining ethereum, a form of cryptocurrency, for the past year. Since blockchain is the basic technology of the metaverse, when my marriage was fixed, I decided to hold a reception at the metaverse. Thought about it,” he added.

The Metaverse is a virtual reality world where users can ‘live’ and interact with others through digital avatars. It combines many elements of technology such as augmented reality, blockchain and virtual reality.

On Twitter, Dinesh shared a short video to show what his upcoming wedding reception will look like, touting it as “India’s first metaverse wedding”.

Dinesh’s fiancée, Janaganandini, was “thrilled” at the idea of a virtual reception. “It’s kind of fitting because we met on Instagram and we’ll have our wedding reception on Meta,” she said.

Since both Dinesh and Janaganandini are Potterheads, their wedding reception will be inspired by the Harry Potter universe. The bride and groom will have avatars dressed in traditional clothes, while guests will be given login details where they can choose an avatar and enter the reception. They will be able to interact with other guests during the one-hour reception.

To turn his idea of Metaverse reception into reality, Dinesh approached Vignesh Selvaraj of Tardiverse – “A New Gen Mixed Reality Based Metaverse Powered by Blockchain Tech”.

In the virtual reception, guests will not only be able to interact with the bride and groom, but will also be able to give them gifts. Dinesh said, “We are accepting wedding gifts through Metaverse.” “Guests can transfer gift vouchers, or Google Pay, and we are accepting crypto as gifts as well.”
