Tamil Nadu leading tourist destination in India, says tourism ministry report

Tamil Nadu has emerged as a major tourist destination for domestic travellers. According to India Tourism Statistics – 2021, Tamil Nadu emerged as the state with the highest percentage of visitors. The state’s share stood at 23 per cent, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 14.1 per cent visitors.

The data depicted the number of visitors entertained by Tamil Nadu in the year 2020. According to the report, Tamil Nadu, in 2020, had around 140 million domestic visitors, while Uttar Pradesh, the second leading state in domestic tourism, had around 86 million. Visitor 2020.

Tamil Nadu also performed well in the list of states that are second only to Maharashtra in foreign tourist visits, which topped the list with a total share of 17.6 per cent. Tamil Nadu was also not far behind with a total visitor share of 17.1% of all foreign tourists visiting the state. Maharashtra received around 12.6 lakh visitors in the year 2020, while Tamil Nadu received 12.2 lakh visitors.

Coming to airports in these top-performing states, in tourism, the list was topped by Delhi airport receiving the maximum number of foreign tourists, taking the total arrivals to around three million. The share percentage awarded by Delhi was 36.4%. On the other hand Chennai Airport is at number four just below Bangalore Airport. Chennai airport received a total of 57,102 visitors in 2020, taking the share percentage to 6.8 of the total.

Most foreign visitors came from Bangladesh, followed by the United States and the United Kingdom. The share percentages of the three countries were 20%, 14.3% and 10.6% in 2020.

Tamil Nadu has been performing very well in the tourism sector for the last five years. Despite the blows inflicted by the state due to the pandemic, the state government has bounced back quite impressively.
