Tamil Nadu has recorded 50 per cent more rainfall than normal in the ongoing northeast monsoon season since October 1, and 53 of the 90 major reservoirs have exceeded 76 per cent storage, officials said.
During this period, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recorded 38 cm of rainfall, which is 51 per cent more than the normal, 25 cm being the normal level.
S Balachandran, deputy director general of meteorology, said that with respect to Chennai district, for the same period, the rainfall experienced was 61 cm, while the normal was 41 cm, which is 50 per cent more than the normal.
‘Red Alert’, He said that the indication of heavy to very heavy rainfall is valid for Chennai on November 10 and 11.
A bulletin of the Meteorological Department said that the red alert is in force in North Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts on November 10.
Red alert is a warning to the state agencies to be ready and take appropriate action.
On November 11, apart from Chennai, a red category warning is in force in Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi and Salem.
The department said that the likely pressure will cross north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by the evening of November 11.
On November 12, there is a possibility of rain only in Hill Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Salem, Tirupattur and Vellore.
The Tamil Nadu government said the state has recorded 52 per cent more rainfall than normal during the monsoon season from October 1 to November 10, an official release said. An official release said 38.81 CMs have been recorded, while the normal is 25.52 CMs.
“Out of 90 major reservoirs in Tamil Nadu, storage levels in 53 such facilities have gone above 76 per cent. Out of 14,138 lakes, storage in 9,153 reservoirs has crossed 50 per cent and 3,691 lakes have crossed 100 per cent. “
While the Theravoy Kandigai reservoir near here reached 100 per cent, the storage conditions at Chembarambakkam, Cholavaram, Poondi and other similar city facilities ranged between 73.66 per cent and 83.21 per cent.
On Wednesday, heavy rains lashed Chennai and adjoining northern areas of Tamil Nadu.
