General elections to urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu will be held on February 19 and counting of votes will take place on February 22, the State Election Commission announced on Wednesday.
State Election Commissioner V Palanikumar said the nominations for the single phase polling will begin from January 28 and will continue till February 4. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on February 5 and February 7 will be the last day for withdrawal of nominations. Announcing the election schedule.
A day after the poll schedule was announced, the Madras High Court on Tuesday allowed the conduct of elections to urban local bodies and said it would monitor the polls.
Holding that the postponement of the election could not be ordered, the court had dismissed a batch of PILs on the issue.
Counting of votes will take place on February 22 and results will be declared on the same day, Mr. Palanikumar said.
He said indirect elections for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor and chairperson and vice chairperson of municipalities would be held on March 4. The newly elected members will assume office on March 2. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Mr Palanikumar said that arrangements have been made to ensure that even coronavirus infected persons exercise their franchise closer to the day of the election.
Polling will be held for 21 corporations, 138 municipalities, 490 nagar panchayats and 649 other urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu. The model code of conduct has come into force from Wednesday.
