The invitation for the Pongal festival in Tamil refers to Ravi as a ‘Tamizhagam’ governor, and does not even have the insignia of the state government and only the insignia of the Government of India.
The tussle between Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and the ruling DMK escalated after the governor used ‘Tamizhgam’ in place of ‘Tamil Nadu’ in his invitation for Pongal celebrations at the Raj Bhavan.
The invitation in Tamil refers to Ravi as a ‘Tamizhagam’ governor, and does not even have the state government insignia and only the Government of India emblem.
CPI(M) MP Su Venkatesan tweeted pictures of the invitation on Tuesday and wrote in Tamil, “Last time the invitation card had the Tamil Nadu government’s motto. This time in the invitation, there is only the slogan of the Government of India at three places. They refused to use it because Tamil Nadu is written in our motto.”

The governor had earlier suggested that Tamizhgam was a suitable name for Tamil Nadu, which led to massive protests from opposition leaders. Allies of the ruling DMK, including the Congress and the MDMK, reportedly boycotted the governor’s address to the state assembly on Monday, leading to a mass walkout.
The DMK and its allies have strongly opposed Ravi’s stand, accusing him of supporting the BJP’s ideological position. Both Tamizhgam and Tamil Nadu roughly mean ‘the land of the Tamils’.
The BJP has supported Ravi on the Tamizhgam controversy. After the DMK came to power in 1967, the erstwhile Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu.
Amid the controversy, ‘#GetOut Ravi’ was trending on Twitter for a few days, and posters with the hashtag were seen in parts of Chennai, ANI reported on Tuesday.
Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday witnessed an tumultuous session as several leaders walked out after the Governor began his speech. The governor also walked out of the assembly after CM Stalin’s speech.
CM Stalin during his speech said that it is really sad that the Tamil Nadu government’s report was ignored without weighing it against the policy. He proposed a motion to remove the governor’s words from the notes of the House in protest of what had been printed. After this the Governor got down from his seat and went away.
The DMK and the governor have been at loggerheads for months over a range of issues, with the Stalin-led government even seeking a memorandum demanding the governor’s withdrawal.
