TANGEDCO cuts trees on roadside but leaves don’t stay clean for days

TANGEDCO activists had carried out the trimming down exercise on several roads in Srinivas Nagar and Kumaran Nagar about a week ago.

The reluctance of the corporation employees to remove the branches and leaves of fallen trees has caused a strong reaction among the residents of Tiruchi.

As per the garbage collection system that has been in place for more than four years, the sanitation workers engaged by the civic body go door-to-door to collect wet and non-degradable waste. There are complaints in some areas that employees are not prompt in garbage collection. Although workers come once in two or three days, they leave untouched branches and leaves of fallen trees.

Residents believe that they did not face any problem in disposing of all types of garbage as dustbins were placed in different parts of the city. They dumped household waste, leftover food, vegetables, discarded items and other garbage in the dustbin. But they could not do so as the corporation had decided to remove the dustbins nearly four years ago under the new solid waste management rules passed by the Center in 2016. Residents were asked to hand over the household waste directly to the workers who came with the pushcart or light commercial. Corporation vehicles.

Since the dustbins have been removed, residents have been unable to safely dispose of the dried foliage. The accumulation of dry fallen trees cut by the Tamil Nadu Generation Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) is a cause of concern among the residents. It cuts down trees along the well developed road which periodically obstructs the power transmission lines on the roads. Fallen branches and leaves are not removed for several days at a time.

TANGEDCO activists had carried out the trimming down exercise on several roads in Srinivas Nagar and Kumaran Nagar about a week ago. The branches have not been cleaned yet. Neither Tangedco nor Tiruchi Corporation bothered to vacate them.

“It has become a perennial problem. We have to wait for weeks for the corporation personnel to remove the dried leaves. They remove the fallen branches only after much persuasion. By the time they collect the leaves, it clogs the drains,” said Srinivas Nagar resident S. Bupati says.

He said that many residents, who had planted trees, cut them down due to problems faced in disposal of dry leaves. He said that the corporation should work out a mechanism for leaf removal in coordination with TANGEDCO.
