In March we first heard about Tata Motors showing interest in the Sanand facility by Ford (now closed, as the company seized manufacturing operations in India). Last time we told you that the deal was in the final stages of acquisition, and both the carmakers will officially announce the news soon after the Gujarat state government reviews the offer for sale. However, now more information has come to the fore. According to a report in Times of India, Tata Motors wants to produce 2 lakh electric cars annually at Ford’s Sanand plant.

The report further states that Tata Motors intends to invest an additional Rs 2,000 crore and aims to achieve this 2 lakh EV manufacturing milestone by 2026. Tata Motors has assured the Gujarat government that no employee will be fired from the Ford facility. An email sent to Tata Motors confirming these developments did not elicit any response.

Tata Motors was one of the first to enter Sanand, Gujarat, and invested ₹4500 crore in the facility to manufacture the Nano. Currently, the plant manufactures the Tiago, Tigor and Tigor EVs and has an annual capacity of 1.5 lakh units. The company currently manufactures around 10,000 EVs per year at the Sanand plant and now with new investments in Ford’s Sanand facility, the company is set to take the EV ecosystem by storm.
