Several electric scooters in India have been engulfed in flames in the past few months. These incidents sparked a series of investigations and raised questions about EV safety. But these incidents were limited to two-wheelers till now. Now however, an electric car has been set on fire in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The car seen in the video is a Tata Nexon EV And Bye Motors has assured that an inquiry has been initiated into the matter.
“A detailed investigation is being done to ascertain the facts of the isolated thermal incident recently that is doing the rounds on social media. We will share a detailed response after our thorough investigation. We will be proud of our vehicles and their users. This is the first instance when more than 30,000 EVs have covered a total distance of 1 million kilometers across the country in about 4 years, the company said in a press statement.
The video shows a Tata Nexon EV engulfed in flames in Mumbai’s suburb of Vasai West. Water splashes are seen on it. Although water is not the best agent for extinguishing an electrical fire, it can help prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding area. Eventually the fire was brought under control.
Electric car fires are not a new phenomenon. Several Tesla cars have also been engulfed in flames in recent days. In a recent incident in California, a Tesla spontaneously burst into flames. However, this vehicle was initially sitting in the junkyard after the accident.
Another incident made news in May this year when a Tesla Model Y driver in Canada said he had to ‘get out of the car’ when the vehicle caught fire while driving. In July 2019, an all-electric version of the Hyundai Kona exploded in an owner’s garage in Montreal. In the same year, carmaker NIO recalled 4,803 units of its EV in China following fire-related incidents in May.
As far as the Nexon EV is concerned, the exact cause of the fire is not yet known. The car is powered by a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery. We’ll update our readers as and when the company has more to say on the subject.
