Tata Motors pushes forward the launch of the new Tata Punch earlier this week and it is now set to go on sale in India on 18th October instead of 20th October. new Bye The Punch is the production version of the HBX concept and the model hasn’t deviated much from the original design. With the new punch, Tata Motors is trying to get the ball rolling in the new micro-SUV segment and is expected to be positioned as an SUV-ish alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Swift and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. Exterior and Platform
Tata says the Punch’s Revotron engine features DynaPro technology, which helps in better power delivery, more low-end torque and higher efficiency.
The Tata Punch is the first Tata SUV to be powered by the ALFA-ARC (Agile Light Flexible Advanced Architecture) platform and is based on the brand’s IMPACT 2.0 design language. Distinctive design elements like the three tri-arrow pattern on the black grille are quite evident and it is surrounded by LED Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) while the projector headlights are positioned down on the bumper. The chunky cladding continues to build on the profile as well as SUV appeal and Tata has already confirmed that the punch will be more of a jacked-up hatchback with some SUV features.
The Tata Punch comes with some SUV credentials like beefy cladding, muscular styling, 187 mm of ground clearance and sporty 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels
The 16-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels and roof rails further enhance the styling and is made more attractive by the dual-tone body colour. The rear also looks equally sharp and stylish, dominated by the sculpted tailgate, which complements the overall design language. The bumper also boasts of bold cladding and squishy LED taillights in harmony with the overall design.

The Tata Punch offers 366-litres of boot space but misses out on the rear air-con vents and the front central armrest.
The dual-tone black and off-white cabin also looks very modern and orderly. The dash’s minimalist design is clutter-free and the horizontal air-con vents with blue bezels add to its funky appeal. The instrument cluster is similar to what we saw in the Altroz and even the door is opened 90-degrees wide, which is again a carryover. It gets a boot space of 366-litres, but it lacks rear air-con vents and a front central armrest.
Properties
The quality and looks of the plastic used in the Tata Punch are good, and the color palette is smart too, and the cabin has a youthful, fresh design feel.
The Tata Punch is equipped with all segment-standard creature comforts. The 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system occupies the center stage and supports the Harman Tune audio system that we have seen on Tata cars like the Tata Nexon and Altroz. The infotainment system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The top-spec model gets the brand’s iRA Connected Car technology as an optional offering and the 7-inch instrument cluster is part digital. It also gets a flat-bottom steering wheel which is a segment first and the feature list includes engine start-stop button, automatic climate control, powered auto-folding wing mirrors, cruise control, auto climate control, cooled glovebox, auto- Huh. Sensing wipers and auto headlights among others.
Engine and gearbox
The 1.2-litre engine in the Tata Punch is offered with both manual and AMT gearbox options.
The new Tata Punch is powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, which also powers the Altroz premium hatchback. The motor is tuned for 84 bhp at 6000 rpm and 113 Nm of peak torque at around 3300 rpm. The engine has been updated with a Dyna Pro system to optimize air pressure for better low-end torque and is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard and a five-speed AMT unit is optional .
SUV Features
Although the Punch doesn’t have 4-wheel-drive, Tata claims that it can handle a bit of off-roading as well.
As for SUV features, the Punch gets segment-first accessories like Traction Pro Mode along with an AMT gearbox which helps it out from a tough position. The SUV credentials are complemented by a 20.3-degree approach angle, 22.2-degree ramp over angle and 37.6-degree departure angle. It offers high ground clearance of 187 mm and water wading capacity of 365 mm.

Tata Punch achieved a full 5-star rating in adult occupant safety and 4-star rating in child occupant safety.

The Tata Punch was recently crash-tested by the Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP) and received a full 5-star rating in adult occupant safety and a 4-star rating in child occupant safety. Its body shell is rated stable, and the car scored an impressive 16.45 out of a possible 17 for adult occupant safety. It gets dual-airbags, an antilock braking system (ABS) and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) as standard.
