Tata Steel launches electric vehicle to transport finished steel in Jamshedpur

Tata Steel began using Electric Vehicles (EVs) to transport finished steel in Jamshedpur after the successful launch of the first initiative at its Sahibabad plant in Uttar Pradesh, a company release said.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, the private steel major has expanded the facility in Jamshedpur with the inauguration from Billet Yard to BK Steel Plant on Wednesday.

Tata Steel has tied up with an Indian startup to further its aspiration to deploy electric vehicles to transport finished steel. Tata Steel has a contract to deploy 27 EVs with a minimum carrying capacity of 35 tonnes of steel. The company plans to install 15 EVs at the Jamshedpur plant and 12 EVs at the Sahibabad plant, the release said.

Speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion, Sudhanshu Pathak, Vice President, Steel Manufacturing, Tata Steel mentioned the adoption of this technology to reduce the carbon footprint and further the cause of sustainability. He said that this initiative is a reinforcement of Tata Steel’s commitment towards the residents of the city as a responsible corporate.

Piyush Gupta, Vice President, Supply Chain, Tata Style said that the initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and will help protect the environment in the long run.

The EV being deployed comprises a 2.5-ton, 275kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a sophisticated cooling system along with a battery management system that has the ability to operate at ambient temperatures up to 60°C. The battery pack is powered by a 160 kWh charger set-up that is capable of charging the battery from 0 to 100% in 95 minutes. With zero tail-pipe emissions, each EV will reduce the GHG footprint by more than 125 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year, it added.
