Teacher’s Day 2022: Make primary schools for universities, a guide to becoming a teacher in India

Teaching is considered one of the greatest professions in the world. Teachers help the students to make their career by providing their knowledge, experience and skills which in turn build the nation and society. To respect the teachers, India Every year on 5th September, Teacher’s Day is celebrated.

The occasion also marks the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former President of India. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna and was also the first Vice President of India. Teacher’s Day 2022: From pre-primary or nursery school teacher to lecturer, professor, let’s take a look at the various ways in which you can take up teaching as a profession in the country:

Pre-primary or nursery school teacher

These teachers play a very important role in helping the child to take the first step towards learning. They deal with children in the age group of three to five years. To take up this role as your profession, you can apply for Nursery Teacher Training (NTT), which is a one year diploma course only after class 12th. Another option is to go for Diploma in Early Childhood Care and education (ECCE) after 12th offered by IGNOU.

elementary School teacher

A primary school teacher deals with students in the age group of 6-12 years. Courses that allow you to take up this profession include a two-year Diploma in Elementary Teacher Training. Apart from this, you can also go for Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEIEd), which is a four-year integrated professional degree program in elementary teacher education. Another option is the two-year Diploma in Elementary Education (DEIED).

Secondary school teachers are also known as Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs). They educate adolescents from class VI to X. This profession can be done by doing a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed). You can enroll in this degree course after doing graduation or post graduation in any teaching subject. Along with this, two years of professional experience will also be necessary.

These teachers are also known as Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs). They teach a particular subject in which they have master’s degree to 11th and 12th class students. To become a PGT, it is necessary to have a B.Ed degree with a post graduation degree in a particular subject.

Notably, one can also appear for the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) after completing B.Ed degree. This will open the way for becoming a teacher in a school controlled by the central government. Similarly, the State Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) allows teaching in a school under the state government.

Lecturer / Professor

To teach in a college or university, you have to appear in the UGC-NET exam. The exam determines one’s eligibility for the post of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) awards. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
