telangana government bans rallies, public meetings amid surge in omicron cases

In view of the spread of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron in the country, the Telangana government today announced precautionary measures to control the spread of the disease. These orders will come into force with immediate effect and will be effective till January 10, 2022.

Under these new measures, the government has banned all kinds of rallies, public gatherings, mass gatherings including religious, political and cultural events.

The General Administration Department of Telangana said that the management of public transport, shops, malls, establishments, officials etc. shall ensure strict compliance of mandatory wearing of face masks, physical distancing and frequent sanitisation of premises.

The management of schools and educational institutions shall ensure that all staff and students wear marks and follow the appropriate COVID practices.

penalty order 1,000 rupees will also be strictly enforced if people do not wear masks in public places. The government also advised senior citizens and persons with comorbidities to take precautions against COVID-19.

The COVID-19 cases continued to rise in Telangana, which on Saturday reported 317 fresh infections, taking the toll to 6,82,215 across the state, a health bulletin said. The number of people increased to 4,029.

The state also reported 12 new cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, taking the tally to 79. 27 people recovered from the new strain, leaving the number of active cases to 52, a state government bulletin said providing details since 5.30 pm on Saturday.
