Telangana High Court on Wednesday (June 11, 2025) suspended the sentence of seven-year imprisonment awarded to Gali Janardhan Reddy by CBI special court – which held him guilty of illegal mining in the Obulapuram Mining Company case.
Three other convicts, V. Dasari Raj Gopal, B.V. Sreenivasa Reddy and K. Mehfuz Ali Khan, of the same case were granted bail by the judge. The CBI special court in Hyderabad on May 6 [2025] pronounced judgement in the criminal case registered by the CBI over allegations that OMC indulged in illegal mining beyond the lands leased out by the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh government to it.
The judgement was announced 16 years after issuing the FIR. The special court held Janardhan Reddy and three others guilty and sentenced them to undergo seven-year imprisonment. Challenging this conviction, the quartet approached the High Court.
Passing the interim orders in a criminal appeal filed by Janardhan Reddy questioning CBI court judgement — following which he was lodged in prison — Justice K. Lakshman directed the petitioner to deposit ₹10 lakh surety. The judge said that the petitioner should not interfere with the judicial process nor leave the country.
