Telangana man returns home after spending half a year in Gandhi Hospital

After over six months of treatment for severe post-COVID complications, a 33-year-old man was discharged from Gandhi Hospital on Saturday.

A resident of the city, M. Suresh Kumar, was bedridden for more than four months and the tertiary care health facility had become a second home for him as he had spent half a year there.

Before being admitted to a government hospital in June, he had ended up saving around ₹6 lakh for treatment at a corporate hospital.

Doctors at Gandhi Hospital performed lung surgery on Mr. Suresh Kumar with multi-organ dysfunction as part of the treatment for sepsis. As his health condition did not allow him to take a step on his own, patient care providers and ward boys were constantly there to help him by feeding him, changing his diaper and everything else.

A resident of Ramanathapur, Mr. Suresh Kumar held administrative positions in nightclubs in the city part of Hyderabad. The hospital’s superintendent, M. Raja Rao, said the patient got infected with COVID in April this year, got hospitalized and made a partial recovery after two weeks.

cost comparison

“After breathing trouble, I went to a private hospital and spent around Rs 6 lakh of my savings on treatment. Thereafter, I was admitted to Gandhi Hospital in June,” Mr. Suresh Kumar said after reaching home.

Doctors at Gandhi Hospital said that the surgery she underwent would cost around ₹15 lakh in a corporate hospital. For the treatment of sepsis and multi-organ dysfunction in the ICU, the patient would have to spend ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh per day. In all, six months of treatment would have easily cost him over ₹1 crore.

critical condition

“During his stay in the hospital, he was very serious. The patient was on CPAP for several weeks with ICD (intercostal drainage) tubes in both lungs. At one point, he was in sepsis with multi-organ dysfunction and was very serious. Dr Ravinder and the CT surgery team also performed his lung surgery,” said Dr Raja Rao.

The patient was monitored for 20 days after surgery. Mr Suresh Kumar said he is now able to walk on his own and expects to resume work in a month. He was out of job for more than seven months.
