The body of 22-year-old Anas Inshasi was draped in a black-and-white flag of a small, radical faction of the Army of Islam. Mourners said he was wounded by an Israeli airstrike while firing mortar shells towards Israel.

Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Friday in what it said was an imminent threat by the Islamic Jihad terrorist group, after one of its leaders was detained by Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank earlier that week. Islamic jihadists began firing rockets at Israel hours after the initial wave of attacks. The violence ended with a ceasefire by Egypt on Sunday.

In three days, Israeli airstrikes killed two top Islamic Jihad commanders in Gaza, and the militant group said it lost a total of 12 militants. The Israeli military says the group fired about 1,100 rockets, of which about 200 failed in Gaza. Much of the remainder was blocked or fell into open areas.

Several Palestinian civilians were among those killed and wounded in the Israeli airstrike, including an 11-year-old girl who died from wounds on Thursday. Two children are being treated in the intensive care unit of a Palestinian hospital in Jerusalem.

At least 16 Palestinians could be killed by self-propelled rockets that fell. No Israelis were killed or seriously injured in the latest flare-up.

Israel and Hamas, which is bigger and more powerful than Islamic Jihad, have fought four wars and countless smaller battles since Hamas seized power from rival Palestinian forces in 2007.

Hamas, which opposes Israel’s existence, took part in the latest fighting, apparently to maintain economic understanding with Israel that has eased the 15-year blockade imposed on the region by Israel and Egypt.
