Tesla recalls 26,681 US vehicles over windshield defrosting software

Tesla told US regulators that the error could have caused a valve in the heat pump to inadvertently open and trap refrigerant inside the evaporator. Tesla will update the software over-the-air to address this issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Wednesday that Tesla Inc. is recalling 26,681 vehicles in the United States because a software error could result in windshield defrosting problems.

Tesla told US regulators that the error could have caused a valve in the heat pump to inadvertently open and trap refrigerant inside the evaporator. Tesla will update the software over-the-air to address this issue.

The recall covers certain 2021-2022 Model 3, Model S, Model X and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles that may not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. It’s the latest in a string of recent recalls for the Texas-based EV maker.

Tesla said it was not aware of any injuries or accidents related to its latest recall, but the NHTSA said it could reduce windshield visibility in certain situations, which could

Increase the risk of collision.

The company said it was prompted by customer complaints in December about a decrease in heating performance in extreme cold weather.

Tesla released a software update to address the issue on January 15 as a precaution. Following discussions with NHTSA and Transport Canada, tests were conducted to assess compliance with the new vehicles delivered with software commands.

Under the scrutiny of US regulators and some lawmakers, Tesla has been issuing several recalls in recent months, including one for a number of software issues.

Tesla has issued at least nine US recalls since October as it faces government investigations into its driver assistance system Autopilot and in-vehicle game feature.

In January 2021, Tesla agreed to a recall of 135,000 vehicles with touchscreen displays that could fail after NHTSA took the unusual step of a formal recall.

The agency said the touchscreen failures led to significant safety issues, including loss of rear view or backup camera images, external turn-signal lighting, and windshield defogging and defrosting systems.
