Thane: Thane Police has arrested Tariq ParveenAlleged associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, in an extortion case in which the former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh is one of the accused.
In another case, Tariq Abdul Karim Merchanta alias Tariq Parveen (55), who is already in jail, was wanted in a case registered at Thane Nagar police station here.
The present FIR names over 20 people, including Singh, who was the police commissioner of Mumbai and Thane, and a few other police officers.
It was registered on a complaint by builder Ketan Tanna, who alleged that Singh and other officials extorted money from him by threatening to implicate him in false cases when Singh was Thane’s police commissioner.
In another extortion case, accused Parveen Taloja is lodged in jail. A Mumbai court on Friday ordered that he be handed over to Thane Police. The Thane police produced him in a local court, which sent him to police custody till September 22.
Singh has not yet been arrested in this case. He was transferred from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner in March after the Antilia bomb attack incident. He later alleged Maharashtra home Minister Anil Deshmukh Corruption, which led to the eventual resignation of the minister.
