A concrete structure put up by a former lessee on a piece of land belonging to Thanjavur Corporation near the renovated old bus stand was demolished by the civic body officials on Monday.
Around 41,000 square feet of land near the old bus stand was leased for 99 years in the 1920s to organize cultural events and other events. But, later, the lessee organization constructed new buildings on the leased area and sub-let it.
Recently, the civic body was successful in reclaiming the possession of 41,000 square feet of land from the lessee through a court order. A notice to vacate the premises was also issued to the lessee organization.
On Monday, municipal officials reached the spot and under the supervision of Collector Dinesh Ponraj Oliver and Superintendent of Police Ravali Priya Gandhapunneni, demolished the buildings and sub-lets meant to run a hotel, wine bar, bakery and a mobile phone shop. ,
Sources said that a large number of police personnel were deployed near the site of the demolition to prevent the public from unknowingly visiting the site.
