Alice Walker’s 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel color purpleAdapted by Steven Spielberg into a 1985 Tony Award-winning musical and Oscar-nominated feature film, is coming back via yet another feature film adaptation. Warner Bros. Pictures on Tuesday launched the trailer of a new film adaptation of the film directed by Blitz Bajavule.
Backed by Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones, the all-new take on the classic is set to open in theaters on December 25 in North America and January 18, 2024 internationally.
The two-minute trailer shows how Celie, after being separated from her sister Nettie, struggles as a black woman living in the American South in the early 1900s. Phylicia Mpasi and Fantasia Barrino play young and adult versions of Celie, while Halle Bailey plays young and old versions of Ciara Nettie.
color purple Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Coleman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, HER, and Anjanue Ellis-Taylor also star. The film’s screenplay is written by Marcus Gardley and is based on both the novel, the musical stage play, and the book of the musical stage play by Marsha Norman.
The film features cinematography by Dan Lostsen, production design by Paul Denham Austerberry, editing by John Poole, and music by Chris Bowers, Brenda Russell, Eli Willis and Stephen Bray. Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristi Macosco Krieger, Carla Gardini, Mara Jacobs, Adam Fell, Courtenay Valenti, Sheila Walcott and Michael Begg are executive producers.
