“Hard work” made her achievements possible, Hima tells NDTV
Chennai:
The daughter of a woman working under MGNREGA, a minimum wage guarantee scheme in Kerala, has secured a seat in Delhi’s premium institute Lady Shri Ram College.
A meritorious student, Hima had secured A+ in class X. With a dream to crack the Indian Administrative Service exam, she chose Humanities and got an A+ in class 12 as well. He scored a century in Economics and Political Science with an overall score of 1187 out of 1200.
Hima, who studied political science in Delhi, told NDTV, “I was very clear about my choice, though many people downplayed it and my aspiration was to become an IAS officer.”
“Hard work” made her achievements possible, she said, “My mother could not afford the tuition. I studied on my own and prepared during my lunch break”.
Confident of clearing the civil services exam, Hima said, “As a civil servant I am able to help others and my community more than a doctor or an engineer.”
Hima’s mother, who earns an average of Rs 1,000 a month, said, “I am sad that my daughter’s college is far away. But when I think about his future, I feel happy.
A Chennai-based non-profit has helped Hima pay the admission fee. However, he still needs at least Rs 2 lakh for his hostel, living and travel expenses in Delhi for a year.
“We were amazed and impressed by the attention she got when others made fun of her,” said Merwin Joshua, who has identified and nurtured Hima’s potential over the years.
