Mulayam Singh Yadav was one of the two last surviving socialists of the Ram Manohar Lohia vintage in Uttar Pradesh, the other being Revathi Raman Singh, who was five years younger than him. Yadav did not share the same rapport with Singh as he did with his other peers, as Singh parted ways with the Janata Dal led by Vishwanath Pratap Singh in November 1990 after the split. Yadav went with Chandrashekhar’s Samajwadi Janata Party, while Singh stayed with VP Singh, an old friend from Allahabad.
