The first car is expected to be an EV version of the soon-to-be-launched Citroen C3 crossover hatchback.

The first electric vehicle (EV) from Stelantis will arrive in India in 2023. The announcement was made by Stelantis CEO Carlos Tavares while sharing the company’s EV strategy for India. Citroen Will lead the charge of electrification for India, though Tavares hopes Jeep Also to follow suit in a few years. Tavares said, “The smart car program is built under the Citron umbrella, and EV versions are part of this programme. Citron will be the leader in introducing the brand EV in India.” The cars in question are being designed with a view to affordability for the middle class consumers in India. Tavares says the price difference is currently due to EVs being 40 to 50 percent more expensive than conventional cars. “It’s our job with our suppliers, to absorb those extra production costs, to protect affordability, for the middle class to be able to pay for this car. So we’re not only bringing in compact cars. who are in the segment less than 4 meters, but we will also bring EV to People Movers (MPV) to launch the next products.”

The first car is expected to be the soon-to-be EV variant Citroen C3 The crossover hatchback which is actually a sub-4 meter model. The C3 will launch in India next month – though it will be the traditional fuel variant lineup. The EV variant will come next year. The modular platform of the C3 is expected to become a compact crossover or SUV model and a 7-seater MPV in the next two years. Each of those cars will also have an EV version. According to Tavares, the biggest challenge is scaling up local content on the EV model. While all India-specific models have a minimum 90 percent localization included in their development plan – it’s still a long way off for the electrics. Stelantis says it doesn’t have a supplier base yet to achieve such a high level of localization for EVs, but expects that to change soon.

The battery itself will be the biggest challenge, as currently the battery needs to be imported. Stelantis will also be actively exploring opportunities to consider local sourcing of batteries for EV models – to further reduce costs. Currently, there are no plans, but such options are expected to become available in the next few years. EVs are a big part of the company’s ‘Dare Forward 2030’ global plan, and they will play a role in India as well, though not as aggressively.

Stelantis also plans to make Jeep the leading EV SUV brand in the world by 2030. The company already offers several plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants of its models in the global markets – badged 4Xe. And there will be a fully electric Jeep model in 2023. But there are no immediate plans to bring either of those to India. However, in the long term, Jeep India will also have an electrified lineup. The brand recently introduced Jeep Meridian 3-Row SUV in India, and its price is set to be announced tomorrow (May 19, 2022). Jeep will also introduce the locally assembled Grand Cherokee later this year. The Citroen C3 hatch will be Stellantis’ next offering in India after Meridian.
