We were all introduced to Kelly Cuoco in the same way. For 12 seasons of the hit show, big bang theory, she was the pretty blonde girl next door. Playing the overused American stereotype, Cuoco didn’t have much space to showcase his acting talent. So, it seems his decision to produce and star in HBO Max’s dark comedy the flight attendant It was created to show the world what it could do.
the flight attendant
creator: steve yokee
Throw: Kelly Cuoco, Zosia Mamet, Deniz Ekdeniz, Michelle Gomez
number of episodes: 8 episodes in each season
Story: A flight attendant spends the night with a passenger suffering from a drinking problem, only to wake up next to his dead body
The drama series is based on a book of the same name by Chris Bohjalian, and in 2017, Cuoco’s production company optioned the rights and was soon joined by WarnerMedia. During production, Cuoco was cast as Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Bowden, a drunken flight attendant. She joins a strong supporting cast consisting of Rosie Perez, Zosia Mamet, Michelle Gomez, Michelle Huisman, Dennis Akadeniz, and TR Knight Griffin Matthews, who have featured on both seasons of the acclaimed show. The show has been nominated for Golden Globe and Emmy Awards, with Cuoco receiving Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress for both seasons.
While the show premiered in November 2020 and was renewed for season two the following month, Indians weren’t able to watch it until Amazon Prime recently announced that the series would be in line with other popular HBO Max shows. Also available on their platform.
Cassandra Bowden is a flight attendant with Imperial Atlantic who also has a serious drinking problem. She is beautiful, funny and extremely charming, who takes one of her passengers to invite her to spend the night with her on a flight to Bangkok. Cassie breaks the rules to see Alex Sokolov, a rich handsome man… Her first mistake is when she tries to erase evidence from a hotel room and by the time she lands in New York, the FBI is on the case. However, she isn’t the only flight attendant hiding a secret. Megan (Perez) is living a double life as an escape from her boring family and flight schedule. The show follows Cassie’s mistakes as she tries to prove her innocence to the FBI while also seeking answers to the questions in her head; “Why did this happen to me?” Being one of them.
The nightmare ends, but a new one begins. Season two follows Cassie’s better life. But in a normal life with a boyfriend, under her job and regular Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, she’s a CIA asset, a job made easy as she travels around the world anyway. Someone is out to get him by impersonating him to kill others, and Cassie plays the detective by trying to figure herself out. Again.
Bingeing the show can give you a light headache as every episode is heavy with emotion, action and suspense. The writing allows each character to have their moment, allowing stories other than Cassie’s to be told. That way, the audience isn’t too overwhelmed by the disastrous decisions they make. For example, watching his gay brother’s troubled childhood helps us understand how adulthood came to be; We get an idea of Kasi’s relationship with the supporting characters and how they fit into her narrative.
Possibly the stand-out of the show is Cassie herself, or rather, Cuoco’s portrayal of Cassie. Due to serious issues stemming from her traumatic childhood, Cassie is dependent on alcohol to sustain her. It’s interesting that we get to see what’s going through her mind. In season one, she’s haunted by the dead Alex Sokolov, as she navigates her case and falls in love with him? (He doubts this too). In season two, multiple versions of Cassie — as a teenager, an alcoholic, a successful woman — all talk to her, giving her conflicting advice. It’s her portrayal of a broken woman, constantly holding the cracks together that’s won her an Emmy nomination, and she deserves it.
Reminiscent of a pretty blonde girl, Cuoco has a talent for beautifying such a scorched character. When you love Cassie, you also start hating her, putting her loved ones in danger. You hate him to the point that you don’t care about him anymore, which is proof of Cuoco’s acting. Cassie has qualities that help hold her dear to us, but it seems the show can’t go on if she didn’t make two mistakes for one right.
Each episode is chaotic, maybe too much. But with skillful acting and impressive dialogues, the flight attendant Cleverly captivates the audience and makes fun of them. Cuoco gave the impression in an interview that Cassie would not be returning for season three and while this is a happy watch, perhaps it is time to close this story.
