A Twitter user who shared the video described it as a modern version of Ramayana.

Even more interesting, it was not his wife who doubted him.

In the mythological epic Ramayana, Goddess Sita had to prove her chastity by undergoing a fire test. Something similar happened in Mulugu, Telangana when a man was asked to prove his innocence by walking on a bed of hot coals and had to remove a hot spade with his bare hands. A video is now going viral on social media in which a man is proving his loyalty to his wife by taking an ordeal. More interestingly, it was not his wife who suspected him of cheating.

A resident of Banjarupalle village named Gangadhar was accused of allegedly cheating on his wife and having an affair with his elder brother’s wife. In the video, Gangadhar can be seen circumambulating the pyre and then stepping on the hot coals.

A Twitter user who shared the video described it as a modern version of Ramayana. “Acid test! In a modern version of the Ramayana, a husband was forced to jump into a fire in Mulugu, Telangana to prove his loyalty. Gangadhar also had to take out a red-hot shovel from the fire to prove his innocence. Interestingly, his wife did not suspect him. Cont,” the user wrote.

In the threaded tweet, the user mentioned that a resident of Banjarupalle village suspected that Gangadhar was having an affair with his wife. The matter went to the community leaders and they decided that Gangadhar would have to undergo an ordeal to prove his innocence. But even after he successfully performed the evil practice, the community leaders were not convinced and forced him to admit his mistake.

Angered by this, Gagadhar’s wife approached the police. It was also pointed out that Gangadhar and the disputing party were asked to pay Rs 11 lakh to the community heads and out of that money Rs 6 lakh has already been spent by the heads.

Twitterati have reacted to the video. One of the users called it “incredible stupidity”.

Condemning the act, another person wrote, “This is the level of literacy in India.”

A third user commented, “There is a lot of tribalism in the districts. The head of the community rules the roost. Even though the populace is aware of the constitutional legal system, they are in the clutches of the heads of the community. Settlements are extortion and the plaintiffs hardly benefit.

The video has been viewed over 2 lakh times since being uploaded.
