The soulful voice behind heart-wrenching hits like KK, Chhod Aaye Hum and Tadap Tadap, no more

Chhod Aaye Hum Woh Galiyan for Gulzar’s Maachis (1996) was one of KK’s first songs sung for a Hindi film. It is one of the first songs about heartbreak and longing that he lent his voice to; He sang many more such songs independently and for films. Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam), Yaaron (from the album Pal), Sach Keh Raha Hai (Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein) are some of his most memorable soulful songs that have been popular among music lovers. He was one of the most successful Indian singers of the 2000s, and has recorded over 700 songs. He has recorded songs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Assamese and Gujarati language films.

Born on August 23, 1968, Krishnakumar Kunnath, better known as KK, was brought up in New Delhi. He was an alumnus of Mount St. Mary’s School in Delhi and graduated from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi. KK started his career by singing for ad jingles, and made his film debut with the AR Rahman soundtrack.

He was introduced as a playback singer with Rahman’s hit songs “Kalluri Saale” and “Hello Dr”. “Strawberry Kanne” from Kadir’s Kadhal Desam and then from AVM Productions’ musical film Minasara Kanavu (1997). he got Bollywood Break with “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). Earlier, she sang a small part of the song “Chhod Aaye Hum” from Gulzar’s Maachis.

In 1999, Keke composed music with a solo album called Pal. The album was arranged, composed and produced by Lewis. The lyrics of the song were written by Mehboob. The songs of Aap Ki Dua, Yaaron and the title track Pal were on the lips of the youth in no time, and also topped the music charts. Pal and Yaron became friendship anthems.

His popular film songs include “Tadap Tadap” (1999), “Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Devdas (2002), “Kya Mujhe Pyar Hai” from Woh Lamhe. Gangster (2007), “Aankhen Mein Teri” from Om Shanti Om (2007), “Khuda Jaane” from Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) and “Tu Jo Mila” from Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015).

Some of his other upbeat songs that became big hits include Dil Chahta Hai, O Humdum Sunio Re (Saathiya), Dus Bahane (Dus), It’s the Time to Disco (Kal Ho Na Ho) etc. He has many songs. To his credit from the movies Main Hoon Na, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Life in a… Metro, Crook and Kites, all of which were musical hits.

KK has also sung many television serial songs like Just Mohabbat, Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Kuch Jhuki Si Palken, Hip Hip Hurray, Kakavyanjali and Just Dance. She has also sung the theme song for Star Parivar Awards 2010 with Shreya Ghoshal. He was invited as a jury member for Pratibha Khoj Fame Gurukul.

He was a major part of Hindi film music, working with many musicians over the years, lending his voice to films of various genres. He is said to have been greatly influenced by singer Kishore Kumar and music director RD Burman.
