The 1,200-bed King George’s Hospital (KGH) here has been a matter of concern over theft of valuables of patients and doctors, including jewellery, purses and smartphones, among others.

According to hospital sources, a few weeks ago gold ornaments (bangles) of a female doctor of the gynecology department were stolen. Recently, the gold ornaments of a deceased patient, a resident of Jiyammavalasa in Parvathipuram-Manyam district, were stolen. The relatives of the victim have lodged a complaint at the One Town police station.

Forest Town Sub-Inspector P. Srinivasa Rao said, “Yes, we have received a complaint that gold ornaments of a deceased patient have been stolen. We are still pursuing the case to collect proper evidence.” Shri Srinivasa Rao said that the main reason for such crimes in KGH is the lack of monitoring system. He also spoke to the hospital management to focus on improving the monitoring system.

talking to HinduKGH Superintendent P. Ashok Kumar said that 160 cc cameras were installed in KGH as per the record maintained by his predecessor.

“Now, I have tasked a team to check all the cameras and their functioning. We will first assess the status of the surveillance system at KGH based on the test reports of the cameras, which will take at least two or three days from Saturday. Later, according to the suggestions given by the police, we will also prepare a proper action plan like fixing the bad cameras and increasing the number of cameras.

He acknowledged that he has been receiving complaints about valuables being stolen from patients and even his staff. He said that a proper monitoring system would definitely control such activities.

“CC cameras play an important role in collecting evidence in sensitive areas like hospitals. Therefore, all hospitals, irrespective of private or government, should have adequate number of CC cameras,” said an investigating officer.
