The admission process in most of the central universities will change from the upcoming academic session as the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) will be applicable for admission to all the undergraduate courses in various central universities across the country. The Union Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) have informed the Central Universities about the mandatory entrance test from the next academic session, after which all the Central Universities have started preparing for CET. Delhi University (DU) has also made CET mandatory for the academic session 2022-23.

These central universities have also passed resolutions regarding CET in their respective academic and executive councils.

According to renowned educationist CS Kandpal, it is a new system and its effectiveness can be tested on the basis of experience. It is not appropriate to comment on the merits and demerits of the new system. He said that educational institutions should see this as a positive change.

Entrance exam can open new doors for the students. Kandpal said that if in future there are defects in the system or in the conduct or in the process of examinations, there is always a chance for improvement.

According to DU Professor Hansraj Suman, 12th marks will not be completely ignored in the name of CUCET. Many central universities have approved the CUCET in their academic council but the class 12 board exam results will also be given importance.

The Union Education Ministry says that there was a demand to implement CUCET for a long time, but now it has been implemented.

Former DU Academic Council member Hansraj Suman said that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the process of awarding marks in class 12 board exams was misused by many schools, which presented exaggerated performance of students.

DU professors are also in favor of completely changing the admission process in their university. However, he says that while doing so, the interests of the marginalized and economically weaker sections of the students should be kept in mind.

According to Suman, the way CET is being introduced, the importance of coaching centers will be seen increasing, due to which students from economically weaker sections may be left behind.

He said that now from the next academic session, students will now have to clear CET with good marks for admission in DU.

Other central universities are also following the same admission policy. This means that from the next academic session 2022-23, admission is possible only through CET in DU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University and other central universities.

Under the current admission system, merit list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in class 12 examinations in most of the universities. Students fill the respective university forms on different dates to get admission. Unable to get admission in the university of their choice, students approach universities and colleges where seats are vacant.

The UGC has said that the CET will be conducted by the National Testing Agency from the academic session 2022-23.
