Maxim Ingrao, a French security researcher, has warned Android users who subscribe to premium services of a new family of malware.
He said a malware named Autolycos has been found to be present in at least eight Android apps that have been downloaded more than 3 million times.
He said that the eight malware apps that have been infected include user-focused apps like camera editor, keyboard theme and video editor.
In a series of tweets, he wrote, “Found a new family of malware that subscribes to premium services. From June 2021 8 apps, 2 apps always in Play Store, +3M installs. No webviews like #Joker but only http requests . Let’s call it #Autolycos”
According to reports, it took Google six months to remove these 8 apps, but their APK versions are still available online.
“It receives a JSON at C2 address: 68.183.219.190/pER/y It then executes the URL, for a few steps it executes the URL on a remote browser and returns the result to include it in requests . a webview to be more discrete,” he further wrote.
The researcher also said that these applications are widely promoted on social media through advertising campaigns on Facebook and Instagram.
“To promote the app, fraudsters create multiple Facebook pages and run ads on Facebook and Instagram. For example, there were 74 ad campaigns for the Razer keyboard and theme malware,” he said in another tweet.
