Police officer says victim has not been identified yet, investigation is on

A youth, a North Indian labourer, died after he was allegedly thrashed by residents of Kettanamalli village in Tiruvallur district following a failed theft attempt on Monday.

Police sources said 80-year-old Vaduvammal lived with her children at their family home in Kettanamalli village along with 52-year-old Chellammal, 50-year-old Shanti and 40-year-old Ramesh. Late on Monday night, after her son left for work, Vaduvammal slept on a cot in front of the verandah. It is being told that the main grill gate of the house was closed.

While everyone was sleeping, three unknown youths entered the house. Police sources said the suspects used sharp stones to break the lock. Vaduvammal, who woke up, shouted for help and protested when the men attempted to snatch her jewellery.

Neighbors rushed to help him and all three ran away. While the villagers were chasing them, one of them fell into a ditch in the field. The villagers caught hold of him and allegedly thrashed him, while the other two fled.

On receiving information, the police personnel of Kavarpettai reached the spot and found the suspect irresponsible. He was taken to the Government General Hospital in Ponneri, where doctors declared him brought dead.

A senior police officer said the deceased was yet to be identified and added that the youth could have died of shock as there were no external injuries on his body. The police suspect that he was a laborer from North India who was employed in a nearby industrial estate. The investigation continues.
