“You are one of the few students. You have overcome many obstacles to reach here. The country needs you. Nehru had great faith in technology. And he thought that somehow having an elite class like you would change the nation. And we needed that change. I fully support Nehru’s view that if there is a justification for an IIT, it should be in the context of what you can do for the country,” said Professor Abhijit Banerjee, Nobel laureate (Economic Sciences, 2019) and said Ford Foundation International Professor. of economics at MIT, who was the chief guest IIT Delhi convocation.
“We need people like you to provide that extra edge we need to become the nation we aspire to be. To that I have to say that I want you to not stop now. Keep trying to change”, he said, adding that “we are in a place where we have big ambitions, we have big problems. And that’s where great talents come in. So be optimistic and think of yourself as the key agent of change.

“Of course, there are a thousand ways to be useful to the nation. You can do something amazing in science and make a country proud. You can find a global company and provide jobs to hundreds of thousands of people. One can invent medicine and save millions of lives,” said Professor Banerjee.
2100 undergraduate students were awarded degrees and diplomas at the 53rd annual convocation of IIT Delhi. A total of 773 students graduated with BTech, 469 with MTech and 307 with PhD degrees. Degrees and Diplomas were awarded for the first time to graduating students in the following new programs – Joint PhD (IIT Delhi and NYCU, Taiwan), Joint PG Diploma in Visionary Leadership for Manufacturing (Jointly with NITIE Mumbai), MS ( R) in Sensors, Instrumentation, and Cyber-Physical Systems Engineering, MSc in Cognitive Science, and MSc in Economics.
In his message to the graduating students, Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi said, “We love seeing you all here on our campus and see you flourish and grow into confident adults ready to go out into the real world. Have seen it happen. You have been lucky to have the best education in our country compared to one of the best in the world. We have high hopes for you. You are at right place at right time. belongs to the future India Our Prime Minister has set a target of making us an Atmanirbhar Bharat- and a developed country by 2047. Today, our society faces innumerable problems – these are challenges as well as opportunities. We are confident that all of you will be the solution leaders for our future. I hope you remember the responsibilities of graduating from IIT Delhi.”
