‘Thinklaazcha Nishyam’ movie review: Sena Hegde’s comedy-drama is an absolute delight

The director and brilliant ensemble cast prove that no story goes stale, if you find novel and creative ways to narrate it

so the title card screams thinkkalazcha nishayayam, feeling proud for the place where the film is firmly set, and creating some novel anticipation in the audience. The original story, narrated as a one-liner, can only manage to cause fainting; Over the years, we’ve seen and heard many stories about women who are forced into marriages against their will, and devised ways to opt out of a proposal. But how you choose the story and what you let the characters do can make all the difference, which is what director Sena Hegde achieved here.

Suja (Anagha Narayanan), the protagonist of thinkclazcha… the one who is being forced to marry an NRI also has an additional burden. Her father Vijayan (Manoj Ku) is still living with the ‘shame’ of his elder daughter Surabhi (Unnimaya Nallappadam) marrying someone of his choice, rejecting a cousin’s proposal, who is also financially would be better. Vijayan thus casts all his hopes on Suja, to redeem himself between the juridical extended family and the larger society. But Suja clearly has other plans.

Director Hegde brings a certain originality and authenticity to the on-screen proceedings, which is not only due to the setting and dialect of Kasaragod (which has found only under-representation in Malayalam cinema). He seems to have the ability to write scenes that bring out the dynamism and underlying tension of the relationship between any given character set. This is quite evident in the scenes following the arrival of various sets of relatives in the house before the engagement, especially in the ways in which Surbhi’s cousin (played by Sajin Cherukayil) shows open contempt but also shows favor with her father. While much of the film’s focus is on a woman fighting for her choices, it also doesn’t take her eyes off the father, who sometimes behaves like an autocrat within the family, even humbly.
