Third ‘blast’ near Amritsar Golden Temple in a week; 5 arrested by punjab police

Amritsar: The Punjab Police has said that there is a possibility that the loud noise heard near Sri Guru Ram Das Niwas near the Golden Temple in Amritsar in the early hours of Thursday was the ‘result of an explosion’. According to the police, the sound was heard around 12.15-12.30 am. Police said the suspects were being rounded up.

Five people have been arrested after a ‘low-intensity explosion’ occurred near the Golden Temple in Punjab’s Amritsar – the third in a week. Police personnel and members of the forensic team reached the spot and the investigation is currently underway.


In a tweet, the Director General of Punjab Police said, “Amritsar low intensity blast case solved.”



Earlier speaking to reporters, Police Commissioner Naunihal Singh said, “A loud sound was heard around 12.15-12.30. There is a possibility that it could be another explosion. It may be noted that Sri Guru Ram Das Niwas – the site of the third low-intensity blast – is the oldest ‘sarai’ (lodge).

Three low-intensity blasts in a week near the Golden Temple


The first blast took place on 6 May and the second on Monday. The site of the low-intensity blast that took place on Wednesday night is about two kilometers from Heritage Street near the city’s popular tourist destination Golden Temple.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Punjab Police have collected forensic samples from the blast site and are probing the incident. On May 6, one person was injured in a blast in Heritage Street near the Golden Temple and glass panes of some buildings were damaged in the blast.

Then the second blast took place on 8 May.
