Youth organizations of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress took out a protest march to the corporation office and demanded the resignation of the mayor to fill up temporary posts with those allegedly appointed in the party.

Tension prevailed in the corporation office after the march taken out by BJP councilors and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha workers. Deputy Mayor PK Raju alleged that he was assaulted by BJP councilors during the protest. The BJP councilors, who staged a sit-in in front of the mayor’s office, were later arrested and removed by the police.

An official release from the mayor’s office said such a letter was never sent by the mayor or his office. The mayor was out of the station on the day the letter was to be sent. An official investigation was being conducted to ascertain the origin of the letter. The letter, whose authenticity is yet to be ascertained, was leaked after it was allegedly shared on a ward-level WhatsApp group.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President K. Sudhakaran said he was not surprised by such an illegal letter from the Left-ruled corporation.

BJP state president K. Surendran, in a statement, demanded that the corporation administration under the leadership of Ms. Rajendran be sacked in the light of the purported letter. He questioned whether the CPI(M) district secretary has taken a decision on filling up the vacant posts in the corporation. The mayor violated the oath by recreating nepotism. He alleged that the corporation was also following the policy of the Left Democratic Front government of giving government jobs only to CPI(M) workers.
