This ‘biggest feature’ of iPhone 14 won’t work in India, here’s why – Times of India

In its far out event, Apple Announced the new iPhone 14 series, which includes two new non-Pro models – the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus – as well as two Pro models – iphone 14 pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. While the non-Pro and Pro models are quite different, they have two common features –accident detection‘ And ‘Emergency SOS via Satellite, Apple expects that you won’t have to use these features, but both can prove to be helpful when needed. However, for now, you will not be able to use the latter’s ‘Emergency SOS via Satellite’ feature in India.
Why ‘Emergency SOS via Satellite’ is not available in India
To enable ’emergency SOS via satellite’ in India, Apple needs to partner with satellite communications (SATCOM) providers in the country, or telecom operators need to tie up with SATCOM players, such as T-Mobile has partnered with SpaceX.
Hence, at present, one cannot use the ‘Emergency SOS via Satellite’ feature in India. However, maybe in future we will get this facility in India if any of this happens.
Apple says ‘Emergency SOS Via Satellite’ will not work on iPhone 14 models purchased in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao. Since India is not on the list, the feature will be available on iPhone 14 models purchased in the country, but users will not be able to use ’emergency SOS via satellite’ as there is no service provider to support the feature.
The Government of India does not allow the use of satellite phones to the general public as it may threaten the national security. Only defense personnel, rescue teams or authorized personnel can use satellite phones. Specific permission/NOC is required to use satellite phone in India Telecom Deptt (DOT).
Hence, there is also a possibility that Apple may impose a regional lock on the satellite connectivity feature in India. it could be something similar to lock on face time In iPhones sold in the UAE.
