After securing a clear majority, the Governor of the state invited Narendra Modi, the nominated Chief Minister of Gujarat, to form the government on 4 October 2001.
After taking oath as the CM of Gujarat, Modi concluded his speech with the slogan ‘Bharat Mata Ni Jai’. He then got down from the stage and drove an open jeep into the crowd amid dhol, bugle and slogans of ‘Apanu Gujarat, Agavu Gujarat’.
In view of Keshubhai Patel’s ill health, he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
After joining office, Modi began engaging the bureaucracy in a tech-savvy manner – video conferencing with at least 10 collectors on the first day.

Nearly four months after he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi contested his first election on the popular ballot. He won and entered the Gujarat Legislative Assembly for the first time.

About four months after he was sworn in, Modi contested his first election on the popular ballot. He won and entered the Gujarat Legislative Assembly for the first time.
Modi became the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat with three terms from 2001 to 2014.
In 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced Modi as his prime ministerial candidate and won 282 seats.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won 386 of the total 543 Lok Sabha seats.
Under Modi’s leadership, the BJP improved its position in last year’s general election and secured 303 seats.
