This train in India is giving free ride to passengers for the last 73 years

Traveling secretly in a train and without a ticket is an offense in India that can sometimes result in fines and even imprisonment. However, there is a train in the country in which you can travel without paying a single penny.

Now, it may sound too good to be true, but passengers have been enjoying free rides in Bhakra Railway train since last 73 years.

The special train runs through the borders of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and is frequently used by passengers for traveling between Nangal and Bhakar. But, passengers need not worry about the ticket as it is completely free.

The operation of Bhakar-Nangal train started back in 1948. The need for a special train was realized only during the construction of Bhakar Nangal Dam. At that time there was no means of transport between Nangal and Bhakar. Therefore, it was decided to lay a railway track on the route to facilitate the transportation of both heavy machinery and workers.

Initially, the train was operated using steam locomotives, but they were later replaced by three new locomotives imported from the US in 1953. Now, although five models of the engine are offered by the Indian Railways, the special train continues to run with its 60. -Year old engine.

The coaches are also unique and were made in Karachi. In addition, the seats are also made of colonial-era wooden benches.

The Heritage Bhakar-Nangal train covers a distance of 13 kms through Shivalik Hills. It enters Nehla station and drains into Nangal Dam in Punjab. Reportedly, the train consumes 18 to 20 liters of diesel per hour, but despite the cost, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has decided to keep it free.

The railway track has been laid with the Nangal Dam waters and daily commuters, BBMB employees, school students and visitors still get the benefit of free rides.

Due to financial issues, the BBMB had even considered eliminating the once free ride. But, later it was decided that the train was not just a source of income. It noted that the Bhakar-Nangal train represents heritage and tradition and resumed its free service.
