On October 19, the girl was allegedly gang-raped in a three-storey building in Kumarghat.
Agartala:
Three people have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl in Tripura’s Unakoti district.
Claiming that the son of a state minister was involved in the incident, the opposition Congress and CPI(M) demanded the arrest of all the accused, while the BJP rejected the allegation.
On October 19, the girl was allegedly gang-raped in a three-storey building in Kumarghat.
Kumarghat sub-divisional police officer Biplab Debbarma told PTI on Sunday that three people, including a woman, were arrested on the basis of an FIR registered in the case, but some others are still absconding.
In the police complaint, the victim’s mother alleged that a woman from the neighborhood took the girl to the building in Kumarghat, where she was gang-raped.
Congress demanded strict police action against those involved in the crime.
Former Congress MLA Ashish Saha told reporters, “The name of a minister’s son has cropped up in the case. Hence, we seek the statement of Chief Minister Manik Saha on the issue. We demand the immediate arrest of all the accused.”
CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Choudhary said it was “disturbing” to learn that the name of a minister’s son has surfaced in the gang rape case.
“We demand an inquiry to ascertain the role of the minister’s son. If he is an accused in the case, he should be arrested immediately,” Choudhary said.
The BJP, however, termed the allegations as “politically motivated”.
BJP’s Unakoti district president Pabitra Chandra Devnath said, “The allegations are completely baseless and politically motivated as he (the minister’s son) was in Agartala at the time of the incident at Kumarghat on October 19. We also want to arrest all the accused. “
