Brussels, Belgium:
Three people were wounded, one seriously, in a knife attack on Monday at a metro station near the European Union headquarters in Brussels, officials said, adding that the attacker has been arrested.
Brussels Mayor Philippe Clos said a coordinated police action at Schumann metro station resulted in the rapid detaining of the man.
Police said the condition of one of the injured was ‘critical’.
A source close to the investigation said the suspected attacker was known to police to have “mental problems”.
The attack took place at around 6 pm during rush hour.
The head of the European Union and former Belgian prime minister Charles Michel thanked the police in a tweet and said his thoughts were with the victims.
An AFP journalist at the scene said a woman told people not to enter the station, saying there was a man armed with a knife inside, just as police arrived.
Traffic on the line was disrupted.
