Mumbai/New Delhi : Three Navy personnel were killed and 11 injured in an explosion on Tuesday at the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Ranvir at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, officials said. He said that the incident happened at 4.30 pm. “In an unfortunate incident at the Mumbai Naval Dockyard, an explosion in an interior compartment of INS Ranvir resulted in the death of three Navy personnel,” the Indian Navy statement said.
The ship’s crew responded quickly and got the situation under control quickly, it added. “Three sailors were killed and 11 were injured in the incident. The names of the (victims) will be made public after informing the families about the incident,” a senior official told PTI.
No major “material damage” has been reported, according to the Navy’s statement. INS Ranvir is a destroyer ship. “It was on cross-coast operational deployment from Eastern Naval Command from November 2021 and was scheduled to return to the base port soon,” the Navy said. A Board of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the incident, the statement said. In August 2013, the blasts on INS Sindhurakshak claimed the lives of 18 sailors and caused the submarine to sink in Mumbai harbour.
