Three undertrial prisoners lodged in Yerwada Central Jail in Pune city of Maharashtra, who were undergoing treatment at a government hospital, died due to various ailments, police said.
However, the relatives of the three deceased opposed the claim of the jail administration and the police and staged a sit-in outside the jail on Monday, demanding an inquiry into their deaths.
All three died at Sassoon General Hospital on Saturday, a police official said.
“Of the three undertrials, one was HIV positive, while another was suffering from liver cirrhosis, the third had a heart-related ailment. All of them died during treatment on December 31. It was a natural death,” he said.
