Tight security arrangements in Delhi in view of Republic Day celebrations

Over 27,000 police personnel have been deployed on Republic Day security duty in Delhi and counter-terrorism measures have been intensified, officials said.

According to officials, the police personnel deployed include deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, inspectors and sub-inspectors. Armed Police Force personnel and commandos, officers and jawans of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have also been deployed.

Police said CCTVs equipped with facial recognition software and anti-drone devices have also been installed.

Unlike last year, all major border points of Delhi including Tikri, Singhu and Ghazipur have been sealed to ensure event free and smooth Republic Day celebrations. Officials said additional posts have been deployed and patrolling has been intensified at border points.

On January 26 last year, thousands of farmers protesting against the Centre’s three agricultural laws entered Delhi on tractors and wreaked havoc on the city’s streets. They clashed with the police and even hoisted a religious flag from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort, a privilege reserved for the Indian tricolor.

“We have sealed the borders and put up additional pickets in coordination with our counterparts. No commercial vehicles will be allowed to enter the national capital. Security personnel are keeping a close watch on the site where President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with other dignitaries and thousands of people will celebrate the occasion.

“We are fully prepared. We have been preparing for almost two months. Elaborate multi-layered security arrangements have been made across the district. He said that only vehicles with authorized passes or control passes would be allowed towards the work area which have already been issued.

The DCP said that all high-rise buildings have been covered with roofs and anti-drone devices have been installed on many of these structures.

“With the help of multiple agencies, we have taken adequate measures against any kind of drone attacks or anti-social elements. At the same time, we have also informed our employees to take adequate precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. ” At the time of entry and exit, employees have been informed to ensure that this is done in a phased manner and there is no crowding at the entry and exit points,” he said.

Briefing the media on Saturday about the security arrangements, Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana had said that a total of 27,723 Delhi Police personnel, including 71 DCPs, 213 ACPs and 753 inspectors, have been deployed for the Republic Day parade. 65 companies of CAPF are helping them.

Police said counter-terrorism measures have been intensified in coordination with other security agencies.

“For the last two months, we have intensified our anti-terrorist measures. These measures have been taken very intensively on 26 parameters. This is also because Delhi has always been a target of terrorists and anti-social elements. This year also, We have become very cautious,” Asthana had said.

He mentioned that anti-terrorist measures include nakabandi (nakabandi) at various places, checking of vehicles, hotels, lodges and dharamshalas and various verification operations like tenants, servants and labourers.

Counter drone technology is being used for air space security. Asthana said security has been tightened in and around the area where the Republic Day celebrations will take place.

He said that the security arrangements for the Central Vista project have also been made in coordination with the officials of the agencies working on the project.

Apart from Delhi Police, other agencies have also been deployed to ensure foolproof security. About 200 teams are working for this.

Regarding the traffic arrangements, the Commissioner of Police said that an advisory was issued detailing the specific restrictions on the routes so that there is no inconvenience to the public.

According to a recent order, operation of sub-conventional aerial platforms, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), paragliders and hot air balloons, has been banned over Delhi in view of the Republic Day celebrations.

The order came into effect from January 20 and will remain in effect till February 15.
