Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza and the militant Islamic Jihad group fired rockets into Israel on Sunday, a third day of violence that killed nearly 30 Palestinians and sent Israelis to shelters in southern regions and cities, including Tel Aviv.
It marks the most serious escalation between Palestinian militants in Gaza and Israel since the 11-day war in May 2021.
The following timeline, which begins with Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005, covers major flare-ups between Israeli and Palestinian groups in the crowded coastal enclave, home to 2.3 million people:
August 2005 Israeli forces unilaterally withdrew from Gaza, 38 years after being captured by Egypt in the Middle East War, leaving settlements and a densely populated enclave under the control of the Palestinian Authority.
January 25, 2006 Islamist group Hamas won a majority in the Palestinian legislative election. Israel and the United States stopped aid to the Palestinians because Hamas refused to relinquish violence and recognize Israel.
25 June 2006 Hamas militants capture Israeli army soldier Gilad Shalit in a cross-border raid from Gaza, prompting Israeli air strikes and incursions. Shalit was finally released after five years at the prisoner exchange.
June 14, 2007 Hamas occupied Gaza in a brief civil war, diverting Fatah forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, based in the West Bank.
December 27, 2008 Israel launched a 22-day military offensive in Gaza after Palestinians fired rockets at the southern Israeli city of Sedrot. About 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis are reported to have been killed before a ceasefire was agreed.
November 14, 2012 – Israel killed Hamas military chief Ahmed Jabri, and eight days of Palestinian terrorist rocket fire and Israeli air strikes followed.
July-August 2014 The kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teenagers by Hamas sparks a seven-week war that has reportedly killed more than 2,100 Palestinians in Gaza and 73 Israelis, 67 of whom are military.
March 2018 Palestinian protests erupted along Gaza’s fenced border with Israel, and Israeli troops opened fire to hold them back. More than 170 Palestinians are reported to have been killed in several months of protests, which also intensified fighting between Hamas and Israeli forces.
May 2021 Hundreds of Palestinians have been injured in clashes with Israeli security forces at the Al Aqsa compound in Jerusalem, Islam’s third holiest site, after weeks of tension during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Hamas launched a barrage of rockets from Gaza into Israel, following demands from Israel to withdraw security forces from the Al Aqsa compound. Israel retaliated by airstrikes on Gaza. The fighting lasted 11 days, killing at least 250 people in Gaza and 13 in Israel.
August 5, 2022 – Israel killed at least 10 people, including a senior Islamic Jihad commander, in what it calls a series of military targets in Gaza. Islamic Jihad fired dozens of rockets at Israel in response.
Hamas stays out of the fight.
August 6 Israeli airstrikes continue in Gaza while Islamic Jihad has fired hundreds more rockets. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the death toll in Gaza has risen to 24, including six children. Egypt says it is holding talks to defuse the situation.
August 7 – Rockets fired from Gaza reach a distance of 5 km (3 mi) west of Jerusalem, causing no casualties but indicating a new frontier. The death toll in Gaza has reached 30. Tension prevails over Jewish visitors to the Al Aqsa Mosque complex.
